Guild Wars 2: Need Moar Info

So, there's this GW2 forum I hang out on. A lot of people are asking "What are you going to play?" The answer I have is, "Don't know. Ask again when we know the rest of professions." [Blather follows:]

We really don't know enough quite yet for me to be sure, though I do have some ideas. Here's what we do know: we have a warrior (weapon specialist/offensive melee), an elementalist (flexible caster), and a ranger (pet-using and primarily ranged). We're pretty sure there's a necro and a mesmer (both mentioned in the book), though we don't know if they're retaining those names (probably) or how much they're changing from GW1. We know there's a soldier class that has a fairly knightish look, and it's probably a reasonable guess that it'll either be a hybrid melee/caster, or some sort of defensive-buffing melee type, although obviously that's still just speculation. And that leaves two professions which we know very little about, other than it's likely at least one of them will be a gun user. (Some people are fairly sure one of them's an assassin due to concept art; I'm less convinced, and even if it is, I think it's going to have a very different feel than the GW1 version.) It's kind of hard to make a choice when you don't know what the choices are.

That doesn't mean I have no clue what I'm going to play, mind you. I've decided I'm definitely making one of each profession ASAP regardless of what they are; I did eventually in GW1 and while there's a couple I'm less fond of, there's none I disliked entirely. And since the personal story starts with your background choices, it's likely I'll play several humans and sylvari, plus at least two norn, and maybe eventually I'll pick up a second charr and asura, though probably not til much later. But I feel best about playing a character when I know I can make them look "right" to me and give them a good name, and we don't know anything about the character customization options or what the naming rules we'll be.

Here's what I know I'm playing:
  • An Ascalonian-heritage, commoner female human ranger named after my closest-thing-to-main I have, Xylia. She will be blonde and have pigtails (I'm fairly confident there'll be a pigtails style).
  • An autumn (dusk) sylvari, almost certainly female, and probably but not definitely a caster type. I will do my best to make her look autumn-appropriate.
  • A probably-female norn, probably snow leopard totem, but I have no clue what profession. If she's snow leopard, I'm going to go with very light hair; if not, it'll be raven, so I'll do as dark a hair as possible on a norn.
  • A female charr, Ash Legion, named after the mule who's place-holding a name for just this purpose, who will be some profession that can use swords and/or daggers. I'm likely to go with a grey base coat, but we'll see.
  • A female asura, possibly College of Synergetics because of the three it sounds most my style (based only on name, granted), but again, I have no clue what profession. I have no idea what she'd look like, though.

I decided recently that I didn't want to grab too many of my GW1 names. Xylia's a given because someone should be the inheritor of my old stuff, and she's the closest thing I have to a main because she's the one I'm trying to get all the titles on. The mule was deliberately named with a charr name so I could reserve it. I will probably be making another mule because I need some more space to hold onto weapons, and I was thinking of reserving a norn name with it, although since I was thinking of making it another male character, I don't know if I can. (The charr isn't an issue; I came up with a good gender-neutral-sounding name. The norn, though, usually have last names like [name]dottir and [name]son, which means it'd have to match, and I'm fairly sure I want a female norn first... though I may change my mind.) Aside from that, there's a couple names I like, but most of them are far too human-sounding to really be anything else. Most likely if I recycle them it will be for much later alts.

So to fill out the rest of the professions, chances are I'll make a male human, a male (unless the first one is) sylvari, and a male (unless the first one is) norn. The human will probably be a) a noble background and b) either Canthan or Krytan heritage. The sylvari will probably be spring or summer since I may import one of my old names for a female winter. And the norn will either be raven, or if I went with that first, snow leopard or wolf.

Eventually I'm going to want to try out more backgrounds, too. For humans, that means Elonan background and whichever of Canthan or Krytan I didn't use first, plus possibly some duplicate geographical backgrounds but with different social class. For sylvari it means all four seasons. For norn, I'll do whichever of snow leopard or wolf I hadn't yet, but I don't know if I'll do a bear at all. Charr... I'm less sure I'm making a second charr. I might want to, but it might go undone for quite a while, depending on how I feel about the charr-area quests and NPCs. The same goes for asura, although I definitely will make a male one second if I do a second one at all, though until I know more about colleges I can't say for sure which sounds most interesting.

Which I guess means "What race and profession are you going to make?" is answered "Yes."
